Replacement Handles For Windows

Window handles are among the most frequently used elements of your double-glazed windows. They can wear down over time and be worn down or rusty.

To replace a UPVC window handle, you will need to know the spindle length of the handle you are replacing and also its fixings. This can be done by examining the base of the handle that was previously used.

Handle

Over time, uPVC  window handles  and locks can be damaged through wear and tear, or accidental or intentional damage. It can be that the handle or lock becomes difficult to close or open or not locked at all. It may be tempting to replace the entire window unit if this happens, but it is not always necessary. It's usually the situation that a new handle or lock is sufficient.

The most common kind of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette. This handle has an external spindle that is protruding out of the handle. It slots into a gearbox which operates the multipoint locking mechanism inside the window. We stock a variety of locks and handles for all types of uPVC window to ensure that they function in a coordinated manner.

When replacing a uPVC window handle it is recommended to use screws with cover caps to secure the screws and protect them from corrosion. It is also possible to use a washer or spacer to ensure a better seal. A screw cap will prevent water and debris getting into the handle, which can cause damage.

After the handle is removed from the window, it's recommended to wash the spindle of the new handle, and also the threaded portion of the bolt. This will ensure that the new handle is able to fit and function well, and it will also help to prevent any dirt from getting into the multipoint lock.

The next step is to install the uPVC handle. It is important to go through the directions that come with your new handle. You can also look at your previous one to get a better idea of how it's done. The process is usually very straightforward. However, if you encounter any difficulties that aren't covered in this article, it's best to contact our team for further guidance.

It is also important to note that if you are replacing the uPVC handle cockspur (also called an Espag handle) you'll need to check the step height of the window in order to determine the proper size of handle. The step height refers to the distance from the frame or base of the window to the point at which the cockspur's nose handle rests when it is put in place.

Hinges

If your windows begin to close and open with a visible gap, it can be caused by the hinges not being in line with the frame. This is usually an easy fix that can be resolved with a new set of replacement window hinges. We offer a range of options and even alter the size of window hinges to meet your requirements.

We can supply different types of hinges for Upvc and timber windows. These hinges are available in a variety of colors to fit with the existing frames. They are also supplied with all the fixings you need for installation. We can supply repair screws for double glazed windows using older style hinges. This allows you to cut the old thread back into the frame.

We have a variety of different hinge types, from traditional casement window hinges that can be used with a normal or tilt and turn handle up to fire escape egress hinges for use on larger sized side-hung windows. They are designed to open fully in an emergency and incorporate an easy-clean position that makes it easy to clean. We also carry hinges that are restricted in egress and are designed to limit the opening angle of the window to a maximum of 100mm perfect for families with children.

The sound of a hinge squeaking could indicate that the hinges need to be replaced. It's usually caused by metal friction against metal. A small amount of lubricant may help but when the noise continues to recur, it is likely that the hinges will require replacement.

This is due to plumb windows being able to avoid optional binding. The operating sash is aligned with the frame so that the window will be able to open and close correctly. A window that's not plumb could have issues opening and closing, or may become stretched over time, which can cause problems with the seal and appearance of the window.

You can buy replacement hinges for windows made of upvc in imperial or metric measurements. In general, the size in metric is a bit more precise, but it isn't evident when they are fitted. The first corner holes on the track are standard, but the other holes can vary based on the original hardware. We suggest that you take measurements of the holes in your frame prior to purchasing any upvc hinges to be sure that they are the correct size.

Crank

The normal wear and tear that happens over time can cause damage to the window handle, lock, or crank mechanism. This could hinder the ease of opening and closing your windows, and also compromise their security. If your window is difficult to open or shut, or if you hear a clicking sound when you turn the handle, it could indicate you need to replace the mechanism. If you're unable to lock your window or the multipoint locks is damaged, it might be worth replacing this part also.

A new window crank can be replaced with little effort, but you need to ensure that you purchase the right size replacement. Ensure that the replacement has the same step in height as the previous one and can be measured by measuring the distance between the crank arm guide bushing and the notch that runs along the track running across the bottom of the window frame. You can also determine the length of the spindle on your current handle to determine the size of a replacement.

The kind of window handle you own will determine which kind of crank mechanism you need for your casement or awning windows. Espag handles are equipped with a mental spindle at the back which is fixed to the frame of the window and is the motor that drives the mechanism. Cockspur handles come with pegs that are fixed in their position by three or four screws that are fitted into the sash and frame.

Once you've found the appropriate replacement, it's easy to install. Remove any trim mounting screws from the casement cover, and gently lift the cover off to expose the insides of the window operator (Photo 1). Remove any rusted trim screws and compare the new operating lever with the old to ensure that they match. Screw the replacement to your window frame. Replace any screws that are damaged or bent. Then, you can place the casement cover on top of the mechanism.
